There is a breed of hackers who specialize in attacking victims on public Wi-Fi networks. Any time you use a public Wi-Fi network, the chances are that there is a hacker trying to access your login details and other confidential information. Once the hackers get any set of your log-in details, they use the details on multiple sites. If they succeed in unlocking one site, they proceed to hijack your account or simply steal your data.

Public Wi-Fi hackers use different types of apps to hack into the accounts of unsuspecting individuals. Moreover, hackers can successfully hijack sessions on critical sites. For example, if they manage to hijack a session in which an individual is carrying out an online transaction, the hackers may steal the confidential information of the user.  They may then use the information to defraud the user later on.

In practice, it is rare for hackers to carry out this type of attack. However, since you need to increase you cybersecurity at all times, you should take steps to protect yourself. Here are some of the things you can do to protect yourself from public Wi-Fi hackers.

  1. Always use browser extensions to protect your privacy. There are very many browser extensions that you can use to protect your privacy. These extensions work in different ways and for different browsers. However, all of them have the ability to detect suspicious activity and block the activity. Apart from blocking unwanted advertisements, these extensions can identify and block many types of malware. You can use any standard browser extension to protect yourself against the effect of public Wi-Fi hacking tools that hackers use.
  2. Using a VPN on Public Wi-Fi networks. A VPN will increase your level of privacy and security. When you use a VPN to browse the internet on a public Wi-Fi network, you can stay safe from common public Wi-Fi hackers. The only disadvantage of using a VPN on a public Wi-Fi network is that you may experience slightly low speeds. Since a VPN encrypts and tunnels your traffic via secure channels, it ends up slowing down your connectivity. However, if your aim is to stay safe, then experiencing slow speeds will be a small price to pay.
  3. Stay alert when online. Lastly, you should remain vigilant when online. For example, do not click on links that you receive in emails unless you are sure about their authenticity.
